Denver Engagement Photography | Ashley + Brett

People like Ashley + Brett are what makes engagement photography so much fun for me. They were all smiles during their session and the laughter was endless. I am so thankful to have met them at the Wedding Wars bridal show this past January!

For their engagement session, we doodled around the Larimer Square area and Central Business District area of downtown Denver. We had gorgeous evening sunlight and it was even warm enough for some night photos with the twinkling lights of Larimer Square in the background.

Their wedding is scheduled for September at the Beaver Creek Lodge. I can’t wait to see these two dressed to the nines with the stunning vistas of the Colorado Rockies as the backdrop for their wedding photos. I have a feeling that their celebration is going to be just fabulous.

Congratulations to Ashley + Brett on your engagement! I am thrilled to be your wedding photographer and spend your day with you. I can’t wait!

Denver Engagement Photos | Annie + Drew

Ahh engagement photos in Colorado in the late winter. It’s the time of year where a 70-degree day isn’t uncommon, but it’s also the time of year when it can still be bitterly cold. With Colorado weather, Forrest Gump summed it up quite nicely: You never know what you’re gonna get.

For Annie + Drew’s engagement session, we had no clue what we were gonna get that day. The weather was supposed to be in the high 50s and low 60s, which sounded like perfect engagement photo weather.

However…

We ended up with 20-degree weather with wind chill that made it feel much, much colder than that.

But! Despite the less than stellar weather, Annie + Drew seriously toughed it out. Annie looked super cute in her dress + heels combo and Drew totally rocked the pink shirt. Judging by their photos, who would have guessed that it was below freezing that day?!

Congratulations to the sweet Annie + Drew on their upcoming nuptials! If your cute engagement photos are any indication (example: look at their adorable save-the-date photos below), your wedding will be fabulous. I can’t wait!

Engagement Session Locations: Riverfront Park | Millennium Bridge | Museum of Contemporary Art

Alicia + Chad’s Engagement Video Sneak Peek

Let me just start by saying I am no videographer, by any means. I can take a mean photo but video is a whole different animal. Despite the learning curve, it’s something I’ve always wanted to get into. So tonight, at Alicia + Chad’s engagement session, I doodled around and created a little engagement video slash sneak peek. It’s my first time out, so please excuse my shakiness (it was all handheld) and know that for future videos, I will definitely be investing in a monopod. ;)

Denver Wedding Expo | The Lovesick Expo

Wow. That’s all I can say about the Lovesick Expo, which came to Denver for the first time this weekend.

Just…wow.

It was amazing. It was beautiful. It was everything a wedding expo should be: welcoming, upbeat, positive and alive.

Hoop dancers performed, seemingly endless slices of wedding cake were consumed and the beer flowed like wine. But most importantly of all, it was clearly evident that brides + grooms were finding truly quality vendors at the show. That’s all that matters.

The vendors involved were rad, the atmosphere was electric and the brides + grooms that stopped by my booth were so sweet and kind. It was so wonderful to be a part of something so purely awesome. The Lovesick Expo will be back in Denver in February 0f 2015, and MAN…I cannot wait to do it all over again.

I snapped a few photos of my Hobby Lobby-chic vendor booth and a few booths from a few of my trusted vendors. If you missed the show, enjoy a few photos from my point-of-view. Oh, and make sure you come next year! Until then…

First stop: my booth!

Yes, that’s a picture of 13-year-old me, taking a photo with the crappiest plastic 35mm camera at Yosemite. Before I had any clue that this was what I wanted to do with my life. :)

Next stop: -MENTE Freelance Beauty Troupe!

Onwards to: Hourglass Productions!

And now we have: Lalé Floral Designs!

Last but not least: Cakeheads Bakery!

A huge thank you goes out to the gents at Lovesick + the awesome staff of Offbeat Bride for putting this whole enchilada together. What an amazing whirlwind of wedding awesomeness it was.

Venue: Mile High Station

Industry Interview | Chelsea of -MENTE Freelance Beauty Troupe

As a wedding photographer, I get to meet some of the coolest people. Last year, at an industry networking event, I met Chelsea Elle from -MENTE Freelance Beauty Troupe and we bonded instantly over the common desire to create fashion-forward photos together. So far, we’ve collaborated on a styled shoot with the Denver Fashion Truck and have another upcoming styled bridal shoot in March.

Last month, I did a photo shoot with Chelsea and her colleagues. We took photos near Lulu’s Looking Glass, which is a really neat little salon off 14th and Ogden. Afterwards, Chelsea and I sat down for her Industry Interview.

Urban Safari: How did -MENTE come to be? Where did you get the name?

Chelsea: -MENTE was born out of a casual late night conversation. We consider it our brain child. After years of being in salons, we decided to approach hair and makeup in a completely different way. Hairstylists and makeup artists are often generalized and portrayed in a way that we wanted to break away from.

The name -MENTE is derived from Latin. -MENTE is a suffix and its literal meaning is “with mind”. We decided to define it in our own way, meaning to live mindfully and be completely deliberate with both our words and actions. We believe that through giving back to our clients and our community, we can change the lives of others and succeed through positivity.

We really wanted to make brides’ experiences one-of-a-kind by condensing vendors and maximizing potential. We hope to increase satisfaction through the services we offer to brides and other patrons.

Urban Safari: Who all is involved with -MENTE, and what are their positions?

Chelsea: As of right now MENTE is coordinated by co-owners Emily Jayne and Chelsea Elle.

Emily Jayne broke into the industry fully intending to focus on the makeup industry, and she really had no desire to do anything else. Early in her beauty school career, she realized how much she loved and enjoyed doing hair. Graduating from Paul Mitchell The School led her to an advanced training program for ten months through Aveda.

I graduated from Paul Mitchell The School with honors. I began my career as a hair cutting specialist, colorist, stylist and makeup artist, and I take my business very seriously as I focus on serving each client with professionalism. My clients are the backbone of my business, and not only do I enjoy sharing life with them but I’m dedicated to educating them with latest hair trends and product technologies.

-MENTE has recently included another beauty industry professional, Katherine Egloff, owner + operator of Bronzed Cheeks Mobile Airbrushing. Airbrushing since 2006, she has excelled at not only making people look better, but Katherine has a knack for making people feel comfortable no matter the situation. Getting the experience and training from managing a successful tanning salon in Lakewood, she developed the skills needed to turn custom airbrushing into a mobile service of her own.

Urban Safari: What is your favorite style of hair + makeup to do?
space
Chelsea: It’s kind of awesome because we both specialize and take interest in different areas! While I specialize in wedding hair and makeup, I also love to embrace my creativity through eccentric disposition. Emily Jayne is a retro girl at heart. She loves doing pin-up styles as well as bold, dynamic makeup. She often incorporates pops of color into even the most subtle + natural makeup applications.
space
Urban Safari: What is one everyday tip you can give to all the brides out there?
space
Chelsea: H2O is the best-kept beauty secret. Seriously. Drinking a lot of water benefits your body all around. Not to mention the enhancements of your skin, hair and nails!
space
Urban Safari: Who are some of your style icons + inspirations?
space
Chelsea: Our customers are our main source of inspiration. Since we have been blessed to work with such a wide variety of people, we are able to embrace the differences each individual has. We want offer the latest trends but keep and enhance natural beauty, especially because everyone contains their own unique form.

Denver Wedding Photographer | Wedding Wars Styled Shoot

Last month, I participated in my first bridal show as a wedding photographer: Wedding Wars! This was a bridal expo unlike any other. Instead of your typical bridal show with vendor booths and nothing else, there were four teams who created four different wedding vignettes at Baldoria on the Water, a new wedding venue in the Denver area.

For my team, we selected the theme Dark Debutante, and I’m so stoked to share the images from our finished product! We wanted to create something out of the box, and so we went with a 1920s, New Orleans-themed speakeasy vignette full of rich details that I’m in love with.

Planner Lauren Smith of Hourglass Productions was at the helm of the vignette design, and many other awesome Denver wedding vendors chipped in to produce this awesome scene. I hope you love how our theme turned out. I do!

Thank you to Lauren Smith for putting together this amazing vignette!

Etiquette + Engagement Photos | “Save The Date”

Engagement photos are some of my favorite images to take. Hands-down. It’s the perfect time to get creative and capture some truly unique photos of the couple you’re working with, and I always have a blast with the bride- and groom-to-be.

A lot of couples use engagement sessions so that they can include a photo or two in their “Save The Dates”, or the prelude to the real invitation to let friends + family know to put their wedding date in the calendar. I love it when a couple wants to do something creative + different for their engagement photos with the idea of that “Save The Date” photo in mind. For example, Liz + Brian brought their own hand-painted signs for the shoot:

Liz did a fabulous job with her watercolors to create these adorable + personalized signs for her engagement session. Paired with the colorful background and her cerulean blue shirt, the photos have that gorgeous color pop that accentuates her handmade details.

In addition to signs like these, I’ve seen couples use chalkboards, Scrabble tiles and even the bottoms of their shoes as locations to display their wedding date. My favorites are the ones where the dog has a sign around its neck (which my corgi Sherman will be doing when I get engaged) with the wedding date emblazoned upon it. Some of these photos turn out beautifully and are just so cute! I love how creative you can get with this kind of photo.

However, not all brides- and grooms-to-be are keeping it classy like Liz + Brian did. In the wedding photography industry, we’re seeing a growing trend that involves the defacing of public and private property in order to display the wedding date. Sometimes, it’s with something as harmless as chalk (just don’t forget to wash it off when you’re done!) but other times, it’s with a material that’s much more permanent.

Photo || Ron Dressel Photography

A friend of mine recently posted a photo of the remnants of a Save The Date photo shoot on Facebook. In the photo, a white barn-like building was vandalized with what seemed to be a permanent marker or possibly worse — it looked as though it had been etched into the building itself. Judging by the comments on the photo, we were all awed that someone would actually do this.

I get it — I’m a photographer. I want to create that perfect photo for you and make it as awesome + as unique as possible. On the other hand, there is a line that I won’t cross, and I’m hoping no other photographers will cross it, either. I will do damn near anything to get an amazing photo (I’ll also do damn near anything for a burrito) but damaging someone else’s property for a photo? No way.

As professional photographers, it is our duty to ensure that no such vandalization takes place during one of our shoots. Not only is it disrespectful, it’s also illegal.

With inspiration-based websites such as Pinterest, it’s so easy to find tons of awesome ideas + examples for your “Save The Date” photo that don’t involve ruining someone else’s property. There are so many different ways to take a unique “Save The Date” photo that damaging someone’s home or building shouldn’t be an option at all.

So, in order to help combat this trend that’s becoming more and more popular, I took to Pinterest to source some ideas for you awesome brides- and grooms-to-be out there! I’ve collected a few of my favorite ideas for you in this blog post. You can go crazy with some of these ideas and make really fab, personalized crafts for your shoot. It can be displayed on almost anything — baseballs, string banners, even plain old Photoshopping the date on the photo is fine. Just keep it classy. :)

Hopefully you’ll find some inspiration here that will allow you to let your creativity + individuality as a couple show through without disturbing anyone else’s property. Enjoy + have an amazing engagement shoot!

Greeley Wedding Photographer | Stephanie’s Bridal Session

There’s just something that’s so quintessentially cool about well-kept, vintage cars. The shiny paint, pristine leather seats and of course, that everlasting new car smell. Take one look at an old Model T and you’ll wonder how, if possible, could these cars be any cooler?

Well, let me tell you the answer to that question:

Stephanie Jebsen (now Salazar, yay!). That’s how you make these cars look even cooler.

For Stephanie’s bridal session, we scooted up to Greeley to Duran family farm, where the groom’s uncle loaned us a few sweet cars to use for the shoot. We found a field with gorgeous sunflowers that unfortunately also came with a large swarm of mosquitoes. I had bites on both of my cheeks, my hands, and in places I don’t really feel like talking about publicly. They…were…everywhere.

But despite being attacked by an entire military of mosquitoes, we had a wonderful time taking photos and I adore how they all turned out. Stephanie, you were a beautiful bride for me and an even prettier one for Nate last August. I’m so happy for the two of you!
