I’m so excited to present the first chunk of photos from my spring vacation to southeast Asia, where I spent two quick days in Hong Kong, before eventually meeting my roommates in Hanoi, Vietnam.
For the first day, I explored Kowloon, which is just north of the island of Hong Kong. I stayed in a hostel on the fourteenth floor of a Kowloon mid-rise, and had lunch with a lovely grad student from Seoul, South Korea. She was kind enough to casually show me around Kowloon, which was a welcome change from always having to figure out where I’m going on my own. She took me to the Avenue of the Stars, where you can see the skyscrapers of the central business of Hong Kong across the water. We were greeted by tons of fog (and, sadly, smog + pollution), so I wasn’t able to get a crisp, clear shot of the skyline.
The next day, I took a quick ferry across Victoria Harbour to see the central business district for myself. A girl from Florida, who was also staying in my hostel, told me it reminded her of the Capitol from the Hunger Games series, and I couldn’t agree more. It was opulent, shiny, new, and funky, but in a more conservative manner than what you would read in the Hunger Games books. It was a total shift from Kowloon, which had a grungier, more authentic feel to it, whereas the central business district felt almost too clean. Not that that’s a bad thing.
I took the tram up to the top of Victoria Peak, where you have 360-degree views of the island. Again, I traveled up there on a foggy-slash-smoggy day, so a perfect shot of both the Hong Kong skyline and the buildings in Kowloon was unattainable. It was still a breathtaking view, and it was amazing to see how lush the island is.
Early the next day, I hopped on a plane to zip over to Hanoi, Vietnam, where I would meet up with my roommates, Hallie and Lindsey. We will pick up right there in the next installment of photos from my Southeast Asia Safari of 2015! Thanks for stopping by to check out Hong Kong!
Stumbled upon a wedding in Kowloon on the first day. Check out that velvet jacket!
